Research, by the US National Reading Panel, proves that guided, repeated oral-reading procedures that offer guidance from teachers, peers and parents result in significant and positive impacts on a wide range of reading skills.

Reader’s Theater is a shared oral reading strategy that utilizes these characteristics and is proven effective in building word recognition, oral fluency, and comprehension across all grade levels.  Reader’s Theater motivates reluctant readers and provides more fluent readers the opportunity to discover expression, genre, and characterization.

In Reader’s Theater, students “perform” by reading aloud scripts that have been adapted from books or stories.  Scripts are divided into parts and students work together, each reading his/her own part, in order to tell a story.  There’s no memorization, no costumes, no props, no special lighting, only readers.

Reader’s Theater gives students a real reason to read aloud and reluctant readers a reason to reread their stories. It can boost listening and speaking skills, enhance confidence and transform reluctant student readers into students who enjoy reading.  It’s different and fun for all.  The students are motivated and excited to do it.  What more could you ask for?
