Traditional Literature

Traditional Literature is made up of many different kinds of stories.  The categories within this genre become very hard to distinguish between.  One of the main characteristics of traditional literature is that these stories are passed down orally from generation to generation.  Due to this fact, it becomes difficult to distinguish any of the categories from folk tales.

The Characteristics of Traditional Literature Include:

  • Heroes and heroines display traits like cleverness, bravery, or outright silliness

  • Plotlines are straightforward

  • Stories are to the point: good is supremely good; evil is clearly evil

  • The conflict is quickly evident, with the resolution rapping the tale up conclusively

  • Characters are flat or one-dimensional rather than being fleshed out

  • Theses express the values and beliefs of the people who created the stories

  • Language is direct and reflective of its cultural origins

  • Setting is without much detail; time is not pinpointed
